Solution Oriented Counselling
Overview
When Milton Erickson began working, inventing and experimenting with therapy in the 1930’s there was little to choose from in terms of different therapy styles. In the1960's, there were about 60 different therapy models, and today there are more than 250!!!! It is humbling to note that despite the variety; virtually all of the research data finds roughly equivalent results for all models. And perhaps we only need to look at the world to see that that is so. In fact it is the similarities rather than differences between the models that account for the effectiveness of psychotherapy. The Solution Oriented Approach honours these similarities, acknowledges that many of the 250 have their roots in Erickson’s work and in a refreshing answer to today’s consumerism, attempts to simplify and unravel the confusion.
Michael Lambert’s 1992 research points to the existence of four factors common to all forms of therapy that contribute to change; 1: extra therapeutic [40%]; 2: Client – therapist relationship [30%]; 3: placebo, hope, and/or expectancy [15%]; and 4: structure, model, and/or technique used[15%]. As humbling as this is we can see that by creating a trusting, legitimizing relationship, observing and listening to the client and reconnecting them to their life outside therapy, utilising expectancy and trusting in our own individual therapeutic creativity we can maximise our effectiveness. But how do we observe and listen in order to most effectively provide a context for the missing learning?
This is the core of Erickson’s work specifically and the Solution Oriented approach generally.
This diploma offers more than just information and techniques. It was developed by Rob McNeilly and grounded in his 25 years of teaching and learning including personally from Milton Erickson, Humberto Maturana, Julio Ollala and Rafael Eccheveria to name a few. It is a rare opportunity to have the ideas of such people distilled into one approach with Rob’s uniquely creative, playful and illuminating style. Following 10 years working in General Practice with the inherent frustrations of the medical model that appear common to doctors, counsellors, psychologists and allied health workers alike, it was a relief to discover a different way. As a student of Rob’s I was impressed by the refreshing learning experience he offered that usefully allowed me to change how I observed and how I could use what I saw to facilitate learning and change in a client. As a teacher of this approach I have developed a passionate interest in the effectiveness of this way of learning, in students and clients alike.
